Seroquel Description
Seroquel is a medication used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and/or schizophrenia. There may be a greater risk of this occurring in those who have a history of suicidal thoughts or actions, in patients with a family member who suffers from bipolar disorder, or in patients who suffer from a manic-depressive (bipolar) illness. You must watch all patients on this medication carefully and let the doctor know immediately if symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, depression, panic attacks, irritable behavior or any unusual change in behavior or mood occur. You must see the doctor immediately if you have any suicidal thoughts or actions of any kind while on this medication. Seroquel can cause dizziness and drowsiness and using this medicine alone or with other medications, or with alcohol may impair your ability to perform dangerous tasks such as driving. You must avoid alcohol while you are taking this medication. Seroquel can cause lightheadedness and fainting, especially in combination with alcohol and hot weather, or during exercise. You can attempt to prevent this by avoiding situations whereby you may become overheated.
Seroquel can in rare cases cause a painful and prolonged erection and you must contact your doctor if this occurs. Seroquel may cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and this can be fatal. If you develop stiff muscles, a fever, have abnormal thoughts, feel confused, are sweating, or have an irregular heartbeat then you must contact your doctor immediately and let them know that you are taking Seroquel. Another rare thing that can occur in patients taking Seroquel is that they may experience muscle movements that they are unable to control. This is more common in the elderly, in female patients, and in those who are on a high dose for a long period of time. You must contact your doctor if you have a problem with any unusual muscle movements. Your risk of obtaining diabetes may be greater when taking this medication. Elderly patients should take care when taking this medicine, as they may be more sensitive to the effects of Seroquel. Seroquel may have adverse effects on the fetus in pregnant women and so all women who may be thinking about getting pregnant should weigh up the pros and cons of taking this medicine during pregnancy with their doctor. Also there is not enough research for us to know if Seroquel is excreted in the breast milk and so general advice at this time is to not breast-feed while on this medication. For patients who suffer from diabetes it is vital that you have regular blood sugar level checks as Seroquel may affect these levels. Make sure that you talk with your doctor before altering any of the levels of your diabetic medication.
Seroquel Side Effects
As is the case with most drugs Seroquel is not without its side effects. Some of the things that you may notice when taking this medication include: drowsiness, dizziness, nasal congestion, lightheadedness, stomach pain, a sore throat, dry mouth, weakness, weight gain, constipation, vomiting and tiredness. These may be minor and go away during the course of treatment, however if they do bother you then you must talk to your doctor. Seroquel was prescribed to you, as your doctor believes that the benefits will outweigh the side effects and so it is usual to expect some symptoms. You must talk to your doctor as soon as possible if you experience a fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, confusion, fainting, fever, drooling, muscle pain, memory loss, stiffness or weakness, numbness or tingling, seizures, painful and persistent erections, worsening or new mood or mental changes (eg, hallucinations, depression), swelling of the legs, feet or hands, severe or prolonged headache or dizziness, shortness of breath, trouble concentrating, tremor, swallowing or speaking difficulty, uncontrolled muscle movements, trouble walking, standing or sitting still, vision changes, or signs of high blood sugar (increased hunger, thirst, urination, or unusual weakness). Fortunately it is uncommon for someone to have an allergic reaction to this medicine, however they do occur and if you notice severe dizziness, a rash, itching, trouble breathing or swelling then you must seek immediate medical attention.
